The purpose of my portfolio site is to highlight the diverse writing experience I’ve accumulated in my short time as a writer, equally highlighting my undergraduate, graduate and occupational writing experiences. While someday I do hope to delve deeper into covering music as my major journalistic work, right now my portfolio is not tailored to a particular area of expertise, nor have I been writing long enough to accumulate an extensive resume/C.V. That means that what I do highlight will be extremely diverse, and I should highlight that diversity as a strength of my talent as a writer.  These diverse elements will include features/music/opinions/news pieces from my undergrad writing days for the college newspaper, human resources-related columns and articles from my day job, features/Communications-related pieces from my internship, online blog posts from my day job, and Flash works from grad class.

What media elements do you have? What do you need?

Media elements I will have will be links to blog posts from my day job at Progressive Business Publications, links to articles I wrote for my undergraduate newspaper The Hawk (I only graduated a year and a half ago), and links to magazine articles from my internship at the Communications Department at St. Joseph’s University. I will also have pdfs of work I’ve done for newsletters at my day job and additional pdfs of select newsletter articles from my internship. Finally, I will include links to any class projects I’ve done, including the Flash audio slideshows we’ve done this semester and possibly CSS and HTML experience.

What design strategies will you need to create a comprehensive piece that is easy for the audience to use?

Looking at a number of portfolio sites I found online, I like the idea of my name, a photo and a brief tagline to say who I am and what I do/am looking to do – only one1 quick sentence. I’m still not quite sure how to handle the homepage design, but something simple would obviously work best (simply because something hard would be difficult with my limited CSS skills at this point).

Who is the audience? What is their expectations?

Obviously, an audience would anyone looking to hire me for a freelance job or otherwise. My major concern would be to ensure that potential employers can pull up my resume or any of my pieces quickly and without problems, and that they can navigate my site easily and efficiently without becoming frustrated.

The purpose of my online portfolio is to combine the work I’ve done in journalism over the years and present it in an attractive and organized way.

What Do I Have:

*Photography – I have all of the images I want to use. They have been scanned & edited.

*Headline portfolio – I have a PDF of a headline portfolio that showcases my best headlines from The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa, Calif.

*Flash slideshows – I have two that I created for this class, but need to be tweaked before I link them to my portfolio site.

*Updated resume.

What Do I Need:

*I need to compile the best headlines and pages that I have created for the Daily News. I don’t have any of this stuff scanned. This could take a while.

Audience:

My online portfolio would attract colleagues and potential employers in the journalism and communications industries.

Design strategies:

I think the most important part of my portfolio will be dividing my photographs in a way that makes sense. I have a lot of travel photography and I have a lot of street/art photography. Those would be two big categories right off the bat. Perhaps I could have another category for published work, although I have had only three photographs published (in three different newspapers though!)

I’d like the home page to have my name in large type, my major links and a big photograph of something (not sure what yet). I’ll obviously have an “About Me” section in which there will be a photo of me and a description of what I’m all about.
